Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as “artistic”, such as climbing and acrobatics.

The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men’s apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women’s programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

  1. american commentators are so annoying because they actually think all their athletes are absolutely perfect and that they will win gold every single time, so biased.

  2. When I saw Larry Nasar I wanted to vomit. When the girl sat next to him after the vault I was like scoot over just one seat please. I’m so happy he is in jail. He deserves to die. 🙃

  3. Did her coach allow Maroney to wear a white leotard? Many coaches and fans know that competing in white is never a good idea (yes I believe in gymnastics superstitions).

  4. I think the judges are so unfair!!!!!! Why they are always prioritizing the U.S? So sad. They didn't look the contestant's work! They're just looking in your country if it is powerful. 😭😭😭😭

  5. Poor Elsabeth black 🙁 glad she didn’t compete her vault though. She knew she wasn’t going to win and possible injury isn’t worth competing a second vault (especially knowing she’d probably fall again).
