Sen Markey On Kavanaugh Confirmation: A ‘Constitutional Crisis In The Making’

Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts said Saturday that confirming Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh would be a “constitutional crisis in the making.”

Speaking on the Senate floor ahead of Saturday’s final confirmation vote for Kavanaugh, Markey made a speech in which he said Kavanaugh’s views on presidential powers make him unfit to serve on the court while the sitting president’s investigation is “potentially headed to the Supreme Court.”

“With Donald Trump under legal investigation, with legal issues arising from that investigation potentially headed to the Supreme Court, and with Brett Kavanaugh having articulated strong views about shielding a presidents from criminal proceedings, his confirmation is a constitutional crisis in the making.”

The Senate voted 51-49 Friday to advance Kavanaugh’s nomination to a final vote Saturday after GOP Sen. Susan Collins of Maine delivered a key “yes” vote. The final vote is expected to take place between 3 and 4 p.m. local time. (RELATED: This Is How Bad The Media’s Kavanaugh Coverage Has Been)

Large crowds of protesters gathered at the Capitol demonstrating against the confirmation of Kavanaugh, who has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women. The judge has repeatedly denied accusations against him.

One of the largest groups protesting is the Women’s March, which announced it was going to “flood the Capitol.”

A concluded FBI investigation found zero corroborating evidence to claims of sexual assault made against the judge.
